What are the Effects of Music on Fashion?

Image

Music and fashion are two things that have become heavily integrated, each being influenced by one another and shaping the way people perceive certain things. As music and fashion are often influenced by current events and individuality, there have been many ways that different aspects of each of these industries have been affected by one another! Music is often seen as a way for people to express themselves, with music artists often basing the songs they create on what is going on in their life. The same goes with fashion, people often use how they dress as a way to express themselves and what they are feeling at a certain point. If you are feeling down, you may be drawn to darker colours in your closet while if you are happy, you may be wanting to wear something more brightly coloured and cheerful.

Music and fashion collaborations have been popular since concerts and music videos have become a way for artists to better interact with their audiences. How an artist dresses when filming a music video or performing a concert can be heavily influenced by the type of music they sing and thus lead to influencing those who see the show or video. Over the years, many different developments within the music industry have inspired a number of different changes in the world of fashion! From the 1920s jazz and flapper age to the 1950s rock music and punk rock looks, it is easy to see how music has made momentous impacts when it comes to fashion!

What are the Effects According to Different Music Types?

So how are music and fashion related? Why does this occur? Both music and fashion are ways that people can express themselves, and since musicians were seen to be the epitome of fame and success, their style trends were followed by many others emulating what musicians were doing. The following is a brief look at how different types of music influenced fashion trends.

Rap Music

It was during the 1990s that rap music began to take off, and with it, a new style had developed and could be seen in fashion trends! Rap musicians had a signature style of wearing baggy clothes, and new style trends were coming up each and every day!

Pop Music

The 2000s saw a large rise in the popularity of pop music and with it, many different fashion trends were also evolving! This year saw a rise in the popularity of the famous low-rise jeans and low-rise mini skirts, as many pop artists would dress in this style for music videos and concerts. The craze of the pop era was introduced as the internet was rising in popularity, with trends becoming major styles quicker than any other decade before!

Rock Music

Since the 1950s, rock music and fashion have been heavily intertwined. With rock artists like Elvis making way for new forms of music, the fashion industry progressed to follow suit. From darker mens and women’s clothing to the famous tight leather pants, rock music was a large contributor to fashion trends in the 50s. One of the most popular styles to wear was concert t-shirts that people picked up from various events, with many of these styles being popular even today!

What is the Relationship Between Music Culture and Fashion Trends from Past to Present?

The history of music and fashion can take you right back to the roaring twenties. 1920s fashion and music were heavily influenced by one another with the famous ‘flappers’ being inspired to dress in new and more accentuated ways thanks to the music developments from this time period! While jazz is a beloved form of music and expression today, back in the 1920s it was considered highly controversial, testing the limits on what kinds of music had been preferred in the past. As jazz music developed, so did the way that women dressed, as they looked to express themselves according to the music of the times, revolutionising fashion in ways that had never been seen before!

The 1960s music and fashion trends were another great time period, where these two concepts were heavily intertwined. In the 60s, modern forms of jazz, R&B and soul music were developing, and with them, the prominent style of this decade. As women also became more prominent within the music industry, this was a time when women's fashion trends were heavily involved in the music of this time! Modern and classic looks took over, with women wearing suits and pants in styles that had often been more traditionally associated with men!

During the 70s music and fashion were heavily intertwined as the hippy era was introduced! With all kinds of musicians hopping onto the ‘flower power’ bandwagon, styles and fashion trends soon followed suit! The 70s were also a major time for rock music fans, as punk rock was another heavy influencer over the trends that existed within this time period. As new sorts of music were introduced and new names became popular within the music industry, this led to an immense increase in the different styles that were seen as acceptable, which was a huge development for the fashion industry, especially as music and fashion collaborations became more popular.

The 1980s music and fashion scenes were unique and as rock‘n roll was still heavily intertwined into the culture of the time, goth looks started to become popular! As more and more rock bands began to take to the stage, many of them needed an edge, something to set them apart from the rest. From spiked-up dyed black hair to face paint that would make most people a bit uncomfortable, the Goth style was born! Though most did not take the look as far as many rock musicians did, the fashion and music trends in the 1980s were heavily influenced by this gothic persona that musicians had developed, with hard rock being one of the major musical influences of this period!
